Monthly Review: July

Hello there everyone! It only seems like yesterday that I was composing my June wrap-up. The July days have certainly sped by at a rapid pace! But here we are at the end of another month and I think it was a good one all things considered. So let’s get on with the show!

When it comes to what I read, July started off rather badly. The first two books I picked up I ended up DNFing which was not good. They were both supernatural spooky stories that were unfinished and abandoned by me. I really struggled with their low quality. What do I mean? One read like an extended episode of Scooby Doo (very simplistic and clunky) and the other like a confused over the top Victorian gothic melodrama (except that it was set in the 1920’s). But I managed to get things back on track and in the end completed six books – The Vanishing Half, An Eldery Lady Is Up To No Good (collection of very short stories), A Wild and Precious Life, Heartstopper Vol 2 – 3 (graphic novels) and finally Home Before Dark which snuck in right on the stroke of the month’s end. So I think that was pretty good considering the beginning.

I also listened to Every Heart A Doorway, an audio book which was excellent with a really original plot and I have to say it sure was WILD! I also started listening to but put back on the shelf (so to speak) The Haunting of Beacon Hill (one ghost story at a time thanks!). I have a vague and not solid aim of trying to listen to one audiobook a month which I think is reasonable as some can be very long. I have one lined up for August so it will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Generally, away from books, I thought things went well. I guess the main thing that happened was that I changed jobs. It was quite scary (any big change like that always is) but it was absolutely the right thing to do as I am thoroughly enjoying my new role. I feel mentally challenged and invigorated by learning new things and taking on new challenges. And I also managed to squeeze in a week’s leave before I started which was heaven. And while on leave I got busy. I found a new BookTube channel that I love – Rincey Reads – and made extensive changes to this blog. I altered the theme and the way posts are ordered and presented. I am hoping this allows for more flexibility when posting content and will (cross fingers) help me catch up with making my book reviews available.

And I have also stocked up on some graphic novels to read. I like to slip them in between books so that there is variety and I have a break from a wall of words, but am still able to enjoy a good story. I am in the process of working out what it is that I like to read in that format but I’ll keep at it as I have found several gems so far and I know there is so much more out there.

And I think that about wraps it up folks. I think I managed to stay out of trouble! Anyway here’s to a new month which I hope brings you many happy moments and good books!

Lots of Love xxx
